If a person were being tested for diabetes, how long would it take to get the blood test results back? Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Angela
depends on what test was run.

in clinic glucose results can be obtained in as little as 5 seconds. in clinic hemoglobin a1c results can be obtained in as little as 5 minutes. neither of these are generally used to diagnose, just to monitor already diagnosed patients.

if they performed a hemoglobin a1c in the lab, it depends on the lab’s capabilities. the lab i go to used to have to send them to another lab to be ran so it could take 3-5 days for a result. now i get the results the same day.

results on a lab run blood glucose can take around an hour, depending on how backed up the lab is. of course, if you did a glucose tolerance test you’ll also need to include the 3ish hours that you had to sit there while the test was being done.

your best bet would be to call the doctor, find out what type of test will be run, and ask how long it generally takes to get the results from their lab.

Question by sminthian1980: What happens if you have diabetes and eat before a blood test?
Diabetes runs in my family and I’m probably going to get it any time now. My job gives annual physicals and if I’m found to have diabetes, I’ll be fired. Would eating before a blood test stabilize my sugar level if I get it, or just mess everything up?

Best answer:

Answer by firedancermom
Eating before the blood test will cause your blood sugar to go higher. So for many people they’ll eat breakfast and have honey, sugar in the coffee, etc and test borderline for diabetes – then have to go back and re-do it as a fasting blood sugar to get a better reading.

So if I were you would not eat before it at all — or if you have to have very low carbs, sugar, etc.

Also, if you WERE to have diabetes, it is against the law to fire you for this. You would be covered under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). So try not to worry about that.

Good luck!
