Question by Jacey: What are the consequences to people with diabetes who make poor food choices?
I’m doing a research project on the food that people with diabetes can eat. The project is a grant proposal, and I need to find out what the consequences are for people with diabetes who make poor food choices are. Do they get sick, can they die, does their blood sugar spike up? Any help would be appreciated. =]

Do your research and write you paper! You shouldn’t ask people to do your work for you! How will you learn?

Question by shengfng: What kind of food should an old person with diabetes eat?
My Dad has diabetes and all he does is sleep in bed all day everyday. He needs help to go to the toilet and changes his mood every second. His eyes always get swollen and he is super thin! I don’t know what food to make for him since he can’t have oil, fat, and fried foods! I don’t know what to do!

The thing to do is to get him moving. He needs to walk at least 45 minutes a day. For diet, think green. Broccoli, spinach, cabbage, kale, salads. Add skinless broiled chicken or fish for protein. Turkey is also good. For bread, stick with brown. Avoid the white foods (white bread, potatoes). Take it easy. You will get through this.

He sounds like he is also depressed.

Question by Erin: What is diabetes and why do you need to avoid so many things and food?
I have heard that people with diabetes should not take cold, flu or pain medications. Why is this? Also, I have heard that they should avoid exposure to high heat and humidity? Why is this? I also would love to know what it is exactly, and why you need to watch what you eat and use a meter?

My husband is diabetic.

He can eat what he wants as long as he balances his foods out and doesn’t over eat.

Heat and humidity are not factors.

You watch what you eat so you don’t eat more food then the insulin you take can handle.

You use the meter to see how well you are doing and whether you need to make any changes.

Question by Jacob: Can we put overpayment of food stamp benefit in with our bankruptcy?
We applied for food stamps when my husband no longer could work due to diabetic proliferative retinopathy. We were approved. Apparently that was a mistake and the government wants us to repay the 6 months of benefits they gave us. around 5000.00 dollars, we have a family of 5.
We are already filing for bankruptcy, can we add this to it??

I don’t think so – most government payments are excluded from bankruptcy protection, but check with your lawyer to be sure. Also, sometimes government programs have a waiver or hardship exception that reduces or eliminates repayment of overpaid benefits. Talk with your social worker about that.
