I was wondering what the chances of me are of getting diabetes. My grand mom has diabetes(well I think she does she has a machine to check her blood sugar but i never saw her inject herself with insolen) and both of her sisters sons also have diabetes. I think there are about 1 or 2 more people who have it but I cant think of them.

Also does your diet have any effect on wether you can get diabetes or not and how often should I get checked for it?

There is a possibility you can get it. Cut down or keep away from sugars, sweets and carbs.

My husband is 31 years old. He got type 2 diabetes 4 years ago. We now have a newborn and I’m nervous he will get diabetes in his life as well. Anyone know the risks? Thank you!

PS – I am not diabetic and did not have gestational diabetes either. My son was born full term and of healthy weight and size.

It depends. It’s not hereditary, it’s brought on by lifestyle. You just need to make sure you teach your son healthy eating habits. Part of that will be your husband eating healthily, since a lot of what they learn is by example.

ETA: You can pass on a genetic predisposition, but that’s different than being hereditary. It just means it has to be all that much more important for a proper diet and exercise.

You may have heard diabetes is genetic but genes are not the only risk factor for diabetes.

Lifestyle factors including obesity and physical inactivity leads to Type 2 diabetes. These risks coupled with a genetic predisposition are the unpleasant recipe for Type 2 diabetes.

Children as young as 4 years of age are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. If a child is obese and physically inactive, he or she may in fact be heading for diabetes. Talk with your doctor or diabetes educator about a plan that is a healthy lifestyle for your entire family. The best successes for weight loss and diabetes control occurs when an entire family begins eating healthy, focusing on weight loss, and exercising.

A recent study examined prevention of diabetes among those with glucose intolerance (those with elevated blood sugars but blood sugars are not high enough to meet the diabetes diagnosis criteria). The study found risk for diabetes was reduced by 58% by those who did the following:

exercised 30 minutes daily, 5 days per week
lost of 5-7% total body weight if overweight (an example of this might be a 200 lb male losing 5% of his body weight = 10 pound weight loss)
followed a healthy meal plan.
There are many ways to decrease risk even if you are genetically predisposed for diabetes. If your child is overweight or inactive, contact their doctor. Ask about how to help your child reach a healthy body weight. Reduce risk of diabetes for your entire family.

As far as I know, diabetes doesn’t run in my family. My dad has high cholesterol, 2 of my aunts and my mom have high blood pressure, another aunt has a thyroid problem, and my dad’s cousin died from pancreatic cancer. Are my chances high? I’ve heard a lot of these link to diabetes, but I’m not sure which one I’m at risk to get if at all.
I forgot to mention I am 19 years old if that helps.

get a fasting glucose test. it,s big in my family. i,ve never had an issue in my 62 years.

I have three children and my husband and I are contemplating a fourth. I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes with my second and third child. We are contemplating having a fourth, but I am wondering what my chances of the diabetes not going away. Any ideas?

Gestational diabetes is caused by pregnancy and the hormones of pregnancy. It will go away with birth. If you’re asking the chances of getting type 2 diabetes i would say as much as anyone else. just exercise and make sure you have a balanced diet. If you are still concerned talk to your doctor to have it explained. It is really hard to understand and learn! Good Luck

I’ve got both type of diabetes on either side of my family.
But almost two months ago i decided to cut back on my sugar
in take.Since then ive found out that if i dont have atleast 5sugary drinks a day in the evening i get really bad headaches, nausea, and the shakes. are these signs of diabetes? or something else?
i stopped drinking anything with caffine in it because it messes with my heart and my doctor suggested.

You should see a doctor, but maybe your symptoms are caused by caffeine. Try drinking Sprite, 7up or caffeine free cola.

Both my husband and sister in law have type 1 diabetes. My husband develop type 1 diabetes when he was 5 years old, but his identical twin did not. His younger sister developed type 1 diabetes when she was 12 years old.

No one knows for certain what causes Type 1 diabetes, but one of the theories is genetics. Since your husband has been living with it most of his life, he is aware of the signs – thirst, lessening of appetite, weight loss, frequent urination. It is entirely possible that your daughter could become a Type 1, but it’s also possible she won’t. IMO, the best thing to do is to make sure your pediatrician is aware of the family history and to keep an eye on your daughter for signs of the disease without frightening her. I have three grown children and only one is a Type I, diagnosed at 12 years. No one in either my husband’s family or mine has Type I either. There’s not much rhyme or reason to it but it might make you feel better to familiarize yourself with more detailed info at the jdf website. Good luck!

Right now I’m sort of seeing the man I hope to marry and the other day we brought up the subject of babies. We discussing that there may be a high risk if we had children that one of our babies would have diabetes. Diabetes runs in my family and I believe it runs in his. He is a diabetic and I’m not. We figure we are in a very high risk category, but since at this time we’re not married or planning to have kids yet we haven’t asked a doctor. We would both like your opinions and answers.

Hi, well i was wondering what are the chances of me getting the diabetes when your pregnant i really don’t know whats it called but im getting checked on tuesday at my check up. so i was wondering what are the chances?? btw im 17 goring 18 on the 20th… & 6 mnths pregnate..

Just curious. I don’t have diabetes on either side of my parents. I mostly believe people have a genetic propensity to this problem.

Also, if my partner has diabetes (in her family line), what will be the chances for our kids to have it?
