Most people don't realize that diabetes in animals is actually is very common. I worked for a vet clinic for two years as a assistant. and I saw a lot of dogs come through with this. It can be very stress full for the owners. it does require a lot of work and also you will have to have blood screening done regularly now just to make sure everything is going OK with other things like the liver and kidneys which can go fast when a animal is placed on meds. But it is all worth it for your family pet. if your house is like ours then your dog is not just a pet it's family, like one of your own kids. good luck i hope this website will help you understand some more.

I work at a doggy day care, and many of the doggy clients have diabetes..Mostly over pampered small dogs..today's carbohydrate and sugar loaded commercial foods are responsible, as well as genetic predisposition..It is becoming more common by the minute..However, these little guys seem happy and active, and have lived a long time with the insulin therapy.

there is a breeder in our town that keeps churning out these little dogs that develop diabetes..

unfortunately this is becoming more common then you think. Many dogs are diagnosed with this condition and luckily we know enough about diabetes to provide dogs with a long quality life after being diagnosed. Some analysts believe that more and more dogs are coming down with diabetes due to the many unhealthy items found in most commercial dog food products today.

This was the main reason why there are so many organic and human grade dog foods now available in major pet stores today

For example - check out the ingredients of the Dick Van Patten dog food. There are many human grade dog foods today with organically grown grains and vegetables.

You can also find recipes on the internet if you choose to actully make your dogs food fresh yourself. I believe that you can find special home made diets for diabetic dogs also - to lengthen your dogs life and to help maintain his good health you should consider either making his food fresh yourself or switching to a human grade food that is for diabetic dogs - but before you make any dietary changes, please check with your vets for guidelines and suggestions on the very best diet available for your dog.

My dog developed diabetes aged 9. She also went blind and would often have severe seizures due to this where her eyes would roll in her head and my mother would have to cuddle her and talk to her reasuring her everything was ok. It was distressing to watch and we would often cry whilst holding her. While her diabetes was controlled, she then developed cushions disease and a tumor on her brain. You can guess the rest :(

it is more common than most people realize. When I worked at the vet, we had as many mixed breeds as purebreds that had it, too. Just keep it up with the diet & insulin, and keep your vet informed of any problems or concerns. It is managable. Good luck!

In pets you can't always take care of the diabetes (or the cataracts for that matter), or over an extended period of time. . In humans you can have diabetes whether you are skinny or fat. The vet used to say my two cats were fat (when they had diabetes) and that was the cause. So there ya go, which is correct? It just happens with heredity and age.

I had a cat that was diagnosed with diabetes in January 2005 at the age of 10. I also had to give her 2 shots (5 ml-I think) of insulin twice a day. Unfortunately her little body couldn't handle it and I had to put her to sleep in October 2005.

Here is a link to a very interesting article on canine diabetes.

Good luck and I wish your dog a long and happy life.
