Question by The_Reporter: How fat must you be before diabetes becomes a risk?
I’m about 3 kilos overweight, but I also have a family history of diabeties. I was wondering how overweight must you be before diabetes is a risk, or in other words, if I were to get diabetes now, would it be more likely due to my family history of diabetes or my 3 kilo overweight (at 75 when normal is 73kilos) ?

Being over weight does not mean that you get diabetes it simply improves the chances. Its a combination of health issues and your history. I don’t know kilos sorry! so i can’t tell how over weight you are but Its not simply due to being overweight in your case. In most cases its not one factor. smoking, stress and low exercise brings you into a higher risk.

There is no exact number. People with family hx can get diabetes even if they are only sightly overweight. At the same time, some very obese people are not diabetic. Your risks do go up the more weight you have on you, so its a good idea to just stay close to your ideal body weight.
So you are about 3 kgs (6.7 lbs) overweight .are you asking a real question or think people don’t know how many pounds are in a kilo? You are more likely the get diabetes if there is a family history, but that doesn’t mean you will get it. Unless you are way overweight, weight will not really make any difference and then it still may not make any difference.
you dont have to be overweight I was very healthy in weight but I became a diabetic anyway so it just depend on your pancreas
