What are good staple foods to have at home for people with diabetes?

Question by girl_in_vernon: What are good staple foods to have at home for people with diabetes?
I have diabetes and usually get a salad for lunch at work and make chicken for dinner. This is my first winter really focusing on my eating and I live in the Northeast, with are first full storm last week I realized that my days of laying around with friends eating popcorn and watching movies may be over on a day off. What do other store in their home’s for those snack attacks.
I’m looking for non-parashiable items for when we get these sudden snow storms.

Popcorn’s fine as a snack – just control the portion and coun the carbs.
Make a big pot of vegatable soup, freeze it in portions and microwave a bowl when you need something. You can use a meat based stock or a veggie stock.
Sugar free hot cocoa
Jelly Belly makes some sugar free jelly beans in a lot of flavors, so you can have a handful and munch on them, like the popcorn.
String cheese is also a nice snacky thing.

Plain popcorn (no butter), raw veggies, peanut butter crackers, sugar free jello, yogurt cups, fruit cups and sugar-free ice cream are some of the things around my house.

I do allow myself an occasional treat (like a cookie or a brownie).

the ready cut salad greens are great to have at home too along with the cherry tomatos.

I make a lot of soups and stews during the winter. Since diagnosis of diabetes about 10 years ago, my soups and stews have changed in character!!

I used to think soup and stew had to have pasta, rice, potatoes, carrots things like that in them!

The last stew I made had diced ham, 2 cans stewed tomatoes, onion and bell pepper in it.

Think creatively!! I make a lot of strange, thoughts before diabetes, combinations for salads and soups or stews.

Diced chicken, tomatoes, celery, bell peppers, make a very interesting soup also.

Snackies?? I keep lots of apples, yogurt, cheeses, cream cheese, and nuts of all kinds on hand for the munchies.

I just got through doing my Christmas shopping as Mrs Santa Clause!! My hubby is totally happy. We have candy in the house again!! But I won’t be eating much of it. I got the other stuff I want for snackies too!!
