Question by Anastasia: How do I lose weight with juvenile diabetes?
I’m 14 years old and I’ve had juvenile diabetes (otherwise known as type 1 diabetes) for about 3 years. I’m 5′8 and 160 lbs (please no rude comments about my weight.) Would you consider that to be really overweight? If so, how can I exersise without hitting so many low blood sugars? It would kind of defeat the purpose, exersising then drinking juice to get my energy back up. Thanks!

I’m sure your trying to watch the diet thing. ( yeah it’s hard) You can also do as much walking as possible (stopping to rest when needed). Try to keep busy by moving around a lot more and do simple exercises like you have to do in gym class. You really don’t sound like your much overweight for your height.
Your weight is exactly correct for your height!! When you can walk into a store and purchase an outfit that fits correctly without having to be altered then you are correct size! If you have to take it in in places because you had to buy a larger size to cover the necessary girl, then you are over weight. ok?
Exercise without hitting the lows! Have a good nutritious snack before exercising mostly protein and fats with few carb grams in it. This will help you to tone up your bod without crashing. I am type 2 but on insulins and orals and have similar problem even if I could be your grandma!
I really like apple slices with cream cheese dip on them with flavored water before exercising. Just enough to feel like I had a snack. Maybe a quarter of the apple? then after exercising I have the other quarter with more water.
Note: the older you get the more you will have to do the low carb food plan to prevent weight gain. It is caused by having to cover lots of carbs with insulin. Insulin is the hormone that causes fat to stick to our bods, so if we limit the carb grams to minimal then we don’t have to cover them with insulin. Making sense?
But at this point you do not need to lose any weight!! Sounds like you have a terriffic bod and are in good health. Don’t go for the scarecrow girl look! be very happy to have a nicely rounded slightly padded bod! It really does look much better than all skeleton boney with skin draped over it.

Yes, that IS “really overweight” by about 25 pounds.
Being a Type 1 Diabetic, YOU must learn how to “juggle” you caloric intake based on how much you are going to exercise. Simply put, when you are going to exercise, you need to eat MORE food, Don;t exercise then eat — eat then exercise!
TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR! he can recommend you to a Diabetic Trainer who can teach you how to do this “juggling act” — estimating your caloric use for a given exercise, eat more of a healthy diet just before exercising, and adjusting your insulin dosages IF that becomes necessary.
