I am 44 and feel my vision has deteriorated recently. I now wear progressive lenses. Have diabetes, but doctors say I have no diabetic retinopathy.

Ask an optomotrist (eye doctor).

No, how much you use your eyes has nothing to do with how bad they are. Age, genetics, health problems, etc. do.
Yes probably. Try it. When you read, make sure you have a lot of light. Use glasses only for reading, watching television, using the computer etc. The more you use glasses, the worst your vision gets because your eyes get dependent on them.
Eyesight will not improve by not using the computer or not reading , but doing so, along with proper cunsumption of eye healthy nutrients(Vitamin A) will allow your eyes to retain their current condition. The only way to improve eyesight drastically is through surgery.

Also, commenting on what I’m seeing written by others:
Eyesight does not worsen through the use of glasses. It does not change. But after wearing glasses for a long period of time, your brain will be unfamiliar with the way your sight was before your wore them. Its sort of like your internet connection “Once you’ve had High-Speed, you never want to go back to Dail-up” It seems worse than it was before, but… its not.
You can try eye doing exercises to improve your vision. I recently started doing eye exercises to try to improve my vision. I created a blog where I record my progress with the exercises.
I recently saw some improvement. Other people (who have also experienced improvements) have posted comments about their experiences as well. You can check it out at: http://improvingmyeyesight.com/blog
