I am type 2 with moderate retinopathy. I have proliferative retinopathy in one eye and maculopathy in the other. I donlt know if all of these symptoms are due to the retinopathy.

I get floating shapes, sometimes flashes of light and my eyesight is usually blurred to some degree. I don’t see clearly- Its almost as if I am looking through a dirty window.

At night I seem to have lost some of the differentiation between shadows and when watching television I seem to have sort of lines like torch beams across my vision.

I had problems with retinopathy in both eyes after almost 20 years as a type I a few years back. My ophthalmologist ended up performing 13 laser surgeries (6 left, 7 right) over the course of about 18 months. They were quite painful, like a jackhammer on the back of your eyeball, but my eyes have totally recovered and every checkup since has been great.

The symptoms I recall were mostly floaters and streamers in front of my vision, from blood vessel hemorrhaging on the retinas. There were excessive fragile capillaries back there which were leaking. I don’t remember blurriness, but the symptoms I did have were annoying enough. I still wear glasses for driving due to moderate nearsightedness.

If you are diabetic, you should be having a ophthalmologist checking your eyesight on an annual basis because of the higher risk of vision loss. Ignoring retinopathy can lead to a detached retina. Also, it’s important to catch retinopathy before symptoms become evident. Good glucose control is of course the best preventative of any of the common complications of diabetes.
