Question by Princess Fiona: Do I have to see an M.D. to check my eyes for diabetic retinopathy?
Or can I just have my optometrist check them when I go for my glasses and contacts exam? I know I have diabetes and I know I should get my eyes checked once a year.

Optometrist can usually tell, but to be on the safe side, it is recommended that you see an optimologist. Talk to your regular doctor for a referral.

Im go to the eye doctor once a year. Most of it is covered by Medicare if you are over 65.
you should get it checked by the doctor as i dont think optometrist checks the back of your eye where diabetes is concerened with. a family doctor would be enough for annual checks and he will refer you to an opthalmologist if he picks up something along the way.
Depends where you are:
An optometrist check would be fine, but many places in the UK have dedicated screening schemes based on mobile vans with retinal cameras visiting local doctor’s surgeries, photographing all (in theory) diabetics on an annual basis.
That doesn’t include any eye test.
Your regular M.D should be consulted to see what is available/preferred in your country/region.
