I have been Diabetic for 19 years, and also suffer from Retinopathy. I see my eye doctor every six months, and at that time he decides whether I need more or not.

It depends a lot on how well your mother’s Diabetes is under control really. If she watches her diet, and keeps her blood sugars under good control, she may need it only once a year, or every two years for that matter.

I had my first session about 4 years ago, and think I have had 3 or four since. Hope that helps.

Cheers

We are all different so there is no hard and fast rules for retinopathy treatment. I have been Type 1 for nearly 40 years. I have had retinopathy for over 25 years. I had my first treatment 4 years ago and have not needed additional treatment since. I have my eyes checked every 6 months.

How frequently one needs panretinal laser depends on
    1)the severity of the retinopathy
    2)the diabetic control

In your case the laser procedure is only once(but done in 3 sessions). It is done in multiple sessions to minimise pain and prevent complications.Your mother may not need laser treatment after that. But only regular visits to your ophthalmologist and frequent monitoring of the retinopathy status can decide whether she will need furthur laser treatment.
