What are some cookbooks for children with type one diabetes?

My 3-year-old cousin was just diagnosed with type one diabetes. What are some names of cookbooks that I can buy at Barnes and Noble for children with type 1 diabetes? Thanks in advance:)

I don’t know the names of any cookbooks from B & N, but I am sure you could search their web site. Contact the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation – they will have recipes/cookbooks plus a wealth of information to help you & other family members understand diabetes. Probably jdf.org. They also have age-appropriate material to use with your cousin. I am a nurse & have used the site to get info to assist families with a diabetic child navigate the public school system. Kids with diabetes need to eat on schedule as well as have the opportunity to check their blood sugar & take insulin when necessary. Surprisingly, some public schools have been incredibly resistant to working with diabetic children & their families. It is a violation of the law to prohibit a diabetic child from performing the activities necessary to maintain his/her blood sugar. This is down the road for your family – just keep it in the back of your mind. The JDF website is very helpful. Other resources would be the education department of your local hospital(s). The would love to help you. There are summer camps for kids with diabetes, too. It is nice for a child to not be different, for a change – even if it just for a week or so. Good luck to you & your cousin. This is a tough diagnosis – especially for a child.

  2. I'm so sweet I need insulin says:

I’m not sure, most type 1s I know (including me) eat normal food, we just count the carbohydrates we eat and inject insulin to cover the carbs..

Of course, that also depends on what type of insulin regimen that your cousin is using, whether it be sliding scale, NPH, or something else…

No special cookbooks needed. She’ll be on insulin so they will use a sliding scale to give her the appropriate amount of insulin for the carbs she eats. But this book is well-rated and would probably be a great resource.

Because this is not your child, and you don’t know much about diabetes, just ask the parents anything you feel you need to know. The parents will be going to lots of classes, if you babysit this child perhaps you can attend the classes too. It is nice that you want to help but you don’t want to confuse the child’s parents with information that may contradict what the endocrinologist says.
