Diabetes testing involves urine or fingerprick tests that use either a urine or blood sample for examination. In addition, you will need one or more of 3 laboratory blood tests to diagnose diabetes: the random or fasting blood glucose test and if necessary, the oral glucose tolerance test. Your results are associated with your symptoms. If you don’t have symptoms but diabetes is suspected, you will need to perform a blood test on a different day.

·Urine Test.
This form of diabetes testing involves using a dipstick to dip into a sample of your urine and checking the change in color on the dipstick. This is being compared to a standard color chart where indicates the various shades for different amount of glucose present in your urine sample. However, the presence or absence of glucose in urine does not necessarily confirm the occurrence of diabetes. An additional blood test is required.

The blood test is the definitive test. You look for other things in urine when you get these tests done – sugar, creatinine and other things. Sugar appears if the level is too high, but the threshhold for people is different.

I was diagnosed with a finger prick which read like 40 something. My fist doctor misdiagnosed me (apparently he was having a ‘bad day’) and he told me I had a kidney Infection. The doctor pretty much knew what I had as soon as they looked at me but had to make sure with a finger prick.

Glucose tolerance test–the fasting bloods sugar level is determined, a sugar meal is taken and the blood sugar level is followed for three hours or more.

The urine test can come up with things (such as excess glucose) which can indicate diabetes. You can go to a doctor and do it on the day. For a glucose tolerance test (blood test), you will need to fast, and take readings before and 1/2 an hour after ingesting some glucose. If you went to a doctor and didn’t fast, you’d have to wait until another time to do a blood test, but a urine test can be done at any time.

Time is not of the essence when you’re talking about Type I diabetes, because there is no cure. For Type II diabetes, delaying diagnosis by a matter of a week would not make much of a difference, as there is also no sure if you already have it, and you should be looking at living a healthier lifestyle regardless of whether you have it or not.

Urine tests are not reliabel and may not find diabetes until its too late! Blood testing is the ONLY way to go. Diabetes must be caught in the early stages to stop and control it!!!Blood test will do this. I am a type 2 diabetic and have been through this many times. Do it now before major damage is done to the body organs and limbs!!

There are some pretty good symptons. They could be fatigue or tiredness, going to the washroom alot, blindness, wounds takes a long time to heal are some. Usually blood test give you a good indication.

The urine test is a screening test for glucose only, not a diagnostic test. They usually do a glucose tolerance test, which is an initial blood test, then you are given a glucose drink. After 1 hour they take your blood again and see if your glucose level has elevated too high.
