How young will they test a child for diabetes?

My son is 7 yrs old and the doctor advised me that i should wait to have blood work done on him to test for diabetes. The problem is that his father and grandfather, and basically all the men on that side have diabetes.. His grandfather just passed away from it and his father who is only 29 yrs old has a insulin travel case that is strapped to him. It just worries me cause my son is tiny.. Hes always so thirsty and has to go to the bathroom quite offten .. I dont know i was hoping someone would know… Thank you

My son was 11 when he was diagnosed. I recall the first time we went to the endocrinologist there were babies there as young as 1. When I asked the parents how did they know, the response was the babies diaper was always abnormally full of urine and the baby was excessively thirsty.

I noticed the same symptoms in my son and was told the same thing(to wait). My advise to you is don’t wait. Get a second opinion! I waited and my son went into DKA less than 3 weeks later. His blood glucose level was 829. DON’T WAIT!

According to Dr. Arthur Rubenstein, renowned endocrinologist and dean of medicine at Mount Sinai (New York), diabetes is transformed into a juvenile disease. Indeed, the average age at which he was falling. “Ten years ago, we teach medical students that the disease did not affect less than 40 years, said Dr. Robin Goland about type 2 diabetes. Today, children under ten years are affected. “

I would find another doctor. My cousin’s doctor would not test her. but having many diabetic family members one of them tested her after they tested themselves and said get to the doctor for a test your sugar is high. She called her doctor the next day and he reluctantly agreed to a test and found out that further information was needed. Fight or go to another doctor.

DO NOT WAIT! It’s too darned serious and don’t take no for an answer. It’s hard, but if you have to, get another doctor or at the very least a second/third opinion. There is no reason NOT to test. My baby grand daughter just went through an allergy test which consisted of many blood draws (6-8 in one day) to rule out a number of things and she is only 4!

P.S. Granted, the reasoning was different – her mother is severely allergic to shellfish and it was imperative to find out if the allergy was passed to the daughter but the logic is the same: Diabetes could be life altering for your son in the same way the shellfish allergy could be for my grand daughter.

    Type 1 isn’t really genetic.

There is a SMALL, i.e. TIIIINY increase in diabetics if the mother was type 1 and badly controlled. Other than that, type 1 doesn’t seem to have a direct denetic link.

Type 2 is much more likely to be genetically influenced, and at 7, he’s not likely to be type 2 unless he is severely overweight.

He could be type 1, go and get tested very uickly, because he will be severely ill.

Type 2, is rare, and probably not, either way, GET HIM TESTED.

Infants and babies get diabetes. It is never too early , especially if you have reason to believe he may be ill.

My daughter was diagnosed with diabetes at age 2.

    Hello,
Do not wait if you think your son may have an issue. I was diagnosed at 15 months old. Now is the time to check it. Get another Dr. if you need to as this is SERIOUS.
