Can I point you in the direction of the following website, dear lady? It's an easy to read page that gives quite a good breakdown of the risk factors affecting someone for diabetes mellitus. It also gives a breakdown of the percentage of risk for an individual based on whether their parent, or parents, have diabetes, and which type of diabetes they have.
Age, as you seem to suspect, is a factor, as is weight, ethnicity, gender, genetics (family history), lifestyle (levels of activity undertaken), whether or not you smoke, use ... or should that be abuse ... of alcohol.
The most common symptoms to look out for include:
Excessive fluid intake (polydipsia)
Frequent urination (polyuria)
Extreme hunger (polyphagia)
Sudden loss of weight without trying
Frequent yeast infections
Sores and cuts that take a long time to heal
Weakness or fatigue
Blurred vision
There are other symptoms, but these would be the first that you'd probably notice.
