Can You Have Diabetes Even If Your Sugar Level Is Normal?

I have diabetes on both sides of my family and recently I’ve been experiencing a lot of the symptoms, mostly eye problems and migraines. My sugar level was 99, though, which is perfect. What does that mean?

Clinically, you could be in early stages. Typical signs are being overweight, extreme thirst. You may be suffering from hyperinsulinity resulting in your insulin receptors becoming less sensitive requiring more and more insulin. Yes genetics are factors, making diet even more important. Avoid sugar except honey. Stay away from all grains like wheat, rice, etc….. Concentrate on green leafy vegetables and lean meat if type O and B blood and soy and whey protein if type A and AB blood.
The best way to increase the insulin receptors sensitivity is to reduce your intake of simple carbs.
    Good luck!

See a doctor, and ask for an Hba1c test. S/he’ll know what I’m talking about, it’s a test to see what your average blood sugar is over a long period of time. Laypeople shouldn’t attempt to diagnose diabetes themselves.
Other diabetic symptoms include slow healing, constant thirst (and frequent urination to go with it), constant hunger, and unexplained weight loss.
Even if you’re not diabetic now, it’s good to get checked for it every year or so. Make sure that your doctor knows that you have a strong family history of diabetes. It would also be a good idea to maintain a healthy weight, and get regular exercise (says the diabetic woman who doesn’t really do either, do as I say and not as I do). This will decrease your risk of developing diabetes.
ETA: Lay people CAN’T diagnose themselves. A lay person can notice and identify signs of diabetes, but only lab tests can truly tell if a person is diabetic or not, and a lay person cannot order these blood tests for themselves. It’s certainly a good idea to know the signs of diabetes, in order to watch for them and mention them to the doctor.

If your sugar level is normal all the time, then no, you are not diabetic. The key though is the “all the time” caveat. And, I disagree with the poster who says “lay people shouldn’t try to diagnose themselves”. Indeed, we are all taught exactly the opposite! We are definitely supposed to be aware of the warning signs of diabetes and then look for them in ourselves. If we find them, -basically diagnosing ourselves, – then we go to the doctor to confirm our suspicions and get treatment.

You shouldn’t rely on just one test. Test in the morning when you first wake up, and a couple of times 2 hours after you’re done eating.
The symptoms of diabetes come from having high blood sugar. If your sugar isn’t high, then those symptoms are from something else. See your doctor so you can figure out what’s going on.

    Yes of course.
    It can be genetic.
