As long as he keeps his sugar under control, keeps eating healthy, and stays in shape, there’s no reason he shouldn’t live well into his eighties. I’m 55, type two diabetic, in great physical shape, and am planning to live to 85.

As long as he takes care of himself and does what is necessary to keep himself healthy, he can live as long as anyone else.

My aunt and uncle have it and are nearing 70. We went camping for a week this past summer. His biggest health problem is actually an old injury, and hers is heart trouble from being overweight.
You Dad keeps doing wat he’s doing, with current treatment diabetes isn’t going to take him much earlier than the ordinary processes of life.

His life expectancy might be close to normal
His most probable cause of death will be heart disease. Even if he gets diabetic kidnet problems, the cause of death is almost always a heart attack.
His medical care will focus on control of blood sugar, as well as other heat risk factors.
In diabetes we look at a test called Haemoglobin A1C (HbA1C)which tells us the average blood sugar control over the last 3 months… if the Hb A1C is less that 7%, he will be at reduced risk of diabetic complications.
Blood sugar control can be acheived by:
Initially – weight loss, special diet and exercise
    Later – oral medication
Eventually – insulin amy be needed
Whilst we are controlling the blood sugar as above, we also target the other risk factors aggressively:
    1. physical inactivity
    2. smoking – MUST stop
    3. cholesterol – will get a benefit in life extectancy from medication
    4. blood pressure
I’d also suggest daily low dose aspirin to further reduce the risk of a sudden heart attack.
Diabetes poses a significant risk to your father’s health, but if he has a good doctor and follows the above treatment, it is quite possible he can have a long normal life.
