When Diagnoised With Diabetes Do You Have To Go To The Hospital?

My moms friend went to the hospital after they found out she had diabetes.
Do you always have to do that?

Not necessarily. I had to go because my sugar went so high during my glucose tolerance test that it was life threatening (over 800). My doctor had to call an ambulance to his office to have me taken to the ER. It was awful. There was no doubt in the ER doc’s mind that I had type 1 diabetes.
I know people who were formally diagnosed a day or two after testing (when the results came back) and were sent, instead of to a hospital, to a diabetes educator so they could start learning about the disease. They were also referred to endocrinologists for treatment.
Most type 1s that I know spent a few days in the hospital to be brought back under control. I spent a week.

No you don’t always have to go to the hospital with a diabetes diagnosis. It depends on how high your blood test is and if it is type 1 or type 2. The doctor can order a fasting blood sugar and if that is suspicious they may order an A1C test that shows your average blood sugar for 3 months. If it has been out of control for that period of time and the doctor feels that you need insulin then they sometimes admit the person to get used to insulin and a diabetic diet. Other times the doctor can order pills to help control diabetes with out going to the hospital. Again it all depends on the blood work that has been done.

It depends on the reason she went. The 2 may not be related. Typically, unless a specific test is needed to determine if the person has diabetes, it may be done at the hospital because the lab is right there.
She will have to watch what she eats because if her blood sugar gets too low or too high, various things can happen (diabetic coma being one of the worst symptoms, not to mention loss of limb in extreme cases where the patient didn’t take care of him/herself.)

if it is type 1 you have to go to the hospital because they need to get control of your blood sugar and find out how much insulin you need and so your endocrinologist can evaluate you and so you know them because you will spend the rest of your life going to him or her or if you are under 18 you will go to a pediatric one and then once you are 18 you will go to one for adults, also you will need to meet with child services if you are a kid to evaluate you and see how you are taking the news and a psychologist just to make sure you are fine and not taking the news too bad and you will need to meet a nutritionist. but for type 2 i think you only need to go to your doctor and make a plan with him or her

my friend got really sick then she was diagnosed at the hospital. im guessing if you already know you have diabetes what is the need of the hospital. visit your doctor and see if he thinks a trip to the hospital would be wise. or you could call the hospital nurse and fill her in about what is going on and see what she recommends.

not always; depends on how severe the diabetes is, etc; be glad that she went
