People Say You Might Have Diabetes When You Have Frequent Urination. How Frequent?
Posted in Definition on 11. Feb, 2010
People say one of the symptoms to diabetes is having to go to the bathroom frequently. I was just wondering how much is frequently? I think most people go about 3-4 times a day. How would you know?

Signs & symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus:-
* weight loss and fatigue (classic symptoms in older patients)
* Loss of appetite.
* Incontinence.
* Decreased vision.
* Confusion or even delirium.
* Constipation or abdominal bloating (from gastric hypotonicity)
* Retinopathy or cataract formation.
* Skin changes, especially on the legs and feet, due to impaired peripheral circulation; possibly a chronic condition , such as cellulitis or a nonhealing wound; poor skin turgor and dry mucus membranes due to dehydration.
* decreased peripheral pulses, cool skin, decreased reflexes, and possibly peripheral pain and numbness.
The following blood glucose tests are used to diagnose diabetes:
* Fasting blood glucose level — diabetes is diagnosed if higher than 126 mg/dL on two occasions. Levels between 100 and 126 mg/dL are referred to as impaired fasting glucose or pre-diabetes. These levels are considered to be risk factors for type 2 diabetes and its complications.
* Oral glucose tolerance test — diabetes is diagnosed if glucose level is higher than 200 mg/dL after 2 hours. (This test is used more for type 2 diabetes.)
* Random (non-fasting) blood glucose level — diabetes is suspected if higher than 200 mg/dL and accompanied by the classic diabetes symptoms of increased thirst, urination, and fatigue. (This test must be confirmed with a fasting blood glucose test.)
To convert blood glucose reading:- Divide the mg/dL by 18 to get mmol/L. Multiply the mmol/L by 18 to get mg/dL.
I’m diabetic and I get up about 4 times a night. There’s tons of other symptoms that go with that too. There’s unexplained weight loss, extreme thirst that doesn’t go away, fuzzy vision, dry, burning skin, sweating, eventually without medical attention, you will have a fruity scent to your breath, a strong ammonia scent to your urine, vomiting, all of this leads to ketoacidosis which will lead to coma and eventually death. If you suspect it, get checked immediately!!!! I didn’t and ended up in the hospital for three days, it wasn’t fun to say the least.
.Three to four or more times during the night(after you go to bed) can be considered as polyurea (frequent urination). The day time urination 5 times or so depending on the water in take and weather conditions cannot be considered frequent urination. Frequent urination can be due to other reasons and diabetis is only one of the possibilities.
When I was diagnosed, I went to the bathroom every hour or more. I got up six times a night to go. I lost about 10 pounds and I was skinny as it was.
I also carried a 64 oz. water bottle with me and filled it up about five times a day. I drank about 300 oz. of water every day. 120 oz. is a lot for a normal person.
At night, I’d wake up and be choking because my mouth was so dry and I had no water.
More frequently depends on how much you used to go. Say your normal amount was 5 times a day. If you went 10 times a day, that’s a lot more than normal.
Mostly, your doctor should know if you have diabetes. A blood sugar test, a urine test, and taking blood from you should tell them if you have diabetes.
Good luck!
Are you thirsty all the time? Are you going to the bathroom a lot in the daytime only, or do you wake up at night and have to go?
Do you wake up thirsty and have to pee too?
More than once a night?
Are you getting up at night more and more?
If you are, then its possible that you have prediabetes or diabetes.
Get your doctor to do an HbA1c test. It gives your blood sugar average over the last 3 months, which can tell the doctor a lot.
It should be between 3.5 and 5.5 on the HbA1c. If its higher, you have prediabetes or diabetes.
What people say varies from individual to individual. Don’t go by the symptoms. I had NO noticeable symptoms when I was diagnosed during a routine physical. When in doubt, check it out. In other words, if you think you might have diabetes… the sooner you find out, the easier it will be to deal with. The longer you put if off, the more difficult it’s going to be. A blood test is simple… just get one.
when you have to go every 15 to 30 minutes!! And when you have a very dry cottoney mouth, not just thirsty, but like you cannot drink enough liquids to make your brain think you have had anything.
I was in a condition to where I was afraid to leave the house for any reason. A drive to town was totally unthinkable! And without taking a large bottle of water with me, unable to go into the yard either for any length of time or feel like I was going to die of thirst.
that sounds pretty serious and bad. when i was diagnosed at 3, my mom said my symptoms were just going to the bathroom a lot. so she took me to the hospital and i had type 1. you should go to the hospital to see if you do have it. hopefully you dont because it is terrible to have. good luck!
if you go more than 8 times a day or when you are feeling you want to go and when you go you do nothing then this may be diabetes . if this happen you need to make a blood test to make sure .good luck
You can ask the doctor for diabetes treatment, also you can read quality article on diabetes type1 and type2 at the below given address.
Depends on your fluid intake. What you put in would have to equal what you put out. So if you go above this then that is frequent urination (or polyuria).
