Which type runs in your family? Type 1 or type 2? I am type 2. If you eat something sugary about 45 mins before testing your blood and you are a type 2 diabetic, your blood sugars should be pretty high. Anything less than about 110 is normal. If you see it jump up in the 140's 150's and up, you can pretty much assume you're diabetic. As for type 1, I don't know. Your chances of going blind really depend on how out of control your diabetes is and for how long it's been that way. If you take care of yourself and keep your sugars at a normal level, you run a small risk of going blind.

First of all, one finger stick is not enough info to get diagnosed on. You need to see a doctor for proper testing.
The chances of going blind from diabetic retinopathy are very high if you don't take care of yourself and control your blood sugars. Even diabetics who have advanced retinopathy have a 90% chance of retaining vision if they get treatment before the retina becomes severely damaged.
