How To Teach To A Blind Child About Diabetes?

If I’m a nurse and I work in the paediatric department, what methods should I us to teach diabetes (hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia) to a child that was born blind?

Um… I’m pretty sure you can teach it to them just like any other child. There aren’t too many aspects of diabetes education that you have to see for, just explain about the pancreas and the insulin and the blood sugar spikes, don’t use a diagram or a visual comparason that’s all.

Same way you would explain it to any child:
The body has cells that help keep you healthy. When you eat food your body uses insulin to turn the food into glucose wich is like food for you cells so they can keep working. But if you have diabetes your body doesnt make enough insulin or your cells wont accept the insulin that its making, so your cells dont get enough energy. Thats why a healthy diet is so important, so its easier for your body to make energy to feed your cells.

they have special meters now that can say the bs outloud; and diabetes has a lot to do w/how one feels, they don’t need their eyes to tell they are irritable, or feel weak or hungry; however, I am sure that there are challenges that a blind person has that the seeing person takes for granted. why not have someone blind fold you, and have them talk w/you [or the other way around] about diabetes… how to measure insulin, load up syringes; i saw on the novofine pen that they offered something special for blind patients; there must be research -
